AE Theme Reveal – The Moon

I’m really loving the monthly challenges from the Art Elements Team. They’re pushing me to be more creative and try out new ideas and I’m really pleased with where my work is going. This month was another brilliantly inspirational theme chosen by Lindsay – The Moon.

You may have seen recently that I’ve been getting back to making automata. I really love making kinetic art and this month I decided to try something a bit more ambitious. I started off with some mini moon animals. A hare, a fox, and a badger.

You can see them in action here…

This video was made for a new project I’m running as part of the Kickstarter Make/100 event. You can find out more about it and get yourself a mini fox, hare or badger automaton by backing it here… https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/ahouseofwonders/make-100-automata

And for my second piece I decided to go bigger. This moon hare has multiple moving parts.

He leaps across the field as the moon waxes and wanes (sort of) in the back ground.

The cover for the moon has the hare constellation on it…

And with the added lights, you get a real feel of a starry moonlit night.

I’ve been having fun making videos, even if the free music is a bit dodgy, you can see this one working here…

Thanks to Lindsay for a wonderful theme, I’ve had loads of fun making moon themed creations! To see what the rest of the team and guests have made, follow the links below….

  1. This is one of the moments when I want to crawl back into my hole feeling humble with my own contribution to the challenge.

I’m blown away. They are amazing, I’m in love.

  2. Just WOW!!! I was eagerly anticipating your moon project. I had no idea it was going to blow me away like this. Your automaton creations leave me breathless.

  3. You have such mad skills! These amazing pieces have absolutely blown me away. From the mechanics of them to the building of them to the painting of them – they are mind-boggling fabulous. So much!! I don’t have all the words to express how much I admire your skills. Thank you for sharing them with the world!

  4. Your automata are so, so cool! Gorgeous and lovely as well and they make me smile! They have this dreamful and wonderlike quality to them, just love! 🙂

  5. I don’t even have words enough to say how much I love all of these. I won’t be able to choose which animal for myself when it comes to it either, you’ll have to choose a surprise automata for me!

  6. It’s not easy, but your Automata leave me speechless!! Truly, I just want to shrink and be part of them and go into the mechanics to see how they work. I used to collect moveable music boxes and could sit for a long stretches just watching them. I hope you’ll keep making them every month! Alysen.

  7. These are so incredible they literally took my breath away! I just wanted to shrink down and become part of these amazing works of art. They are without a doubt one of the most beautiful works of art I’ve seen. Utterly enchanting.

  8. These are so charming and completely fabulous. I think enchanting is definitely the right word for them. I loved seeing them in motion in the videos too.

  9. I agree with Cat and Anita. You outdo yourself each time and it makes me take a step back and reflect on how these challenges can help you progress with your craft should you choose to put that effort. I didn’t with mine but you have done a fabulous job.

  10. Oh my gosh! Just perfect…. all of them, but that large one, WOW! The added lights behind the moon just pure genius!! It’s so magical!
